About Dutch Harbor Unalaska
Dutch Harbor and Unalaska, located on Unalaska Island and neighboring Amaknak Island in the Aleutian Islands off mainland Alaska, form the main population center in the Aleutian Islands. Operating primarily as an essential port of call rather than a turnaround destination for international passenger vessels, this remote hub allows cruise travelers to anchor or dock securely near Unalaska while exploring the bustling neighboring fishing port on Amaknak Island to the north.
Recognized widely as the largest fisheries port in the United States by volume caught, the working harbor transfers more than one billion dollars annually through massive commercial harvests of pollock and cod from the Bering Sea. This rugged maritime focus on commercial fishing rather than conventional tourism gives the waterfront its authentic character, which gained widespread international fame through regular television features on the Discovery Channel series Deadliest Catch.
Indigenous Aleut or Unangan peoples have inhabited the harsh island landscape for at least ten thousand years before the Russian fur trade arrived with explorer Stepan Glotov and his crew on the first of August in seventeen fifty-nine. Subsequent historical milestones included the construction of the historic Russian Orthodox Church of the Holy Ascension in eighteen twenty-five by founding priest Ivan Veniaminov, later canonized as Saint Innocent of Alaska, followed by a surge of maritime traffic during the gold rush between eighteen ninety-nine and nineteen hundred five.
Fearing strategic threats from Imperial Japan during the Second World War, the United States fortified the area heavily starting in nineteen forty and completed the Dutch Harbor Naval Operating Base just before the dramatic aerial bombardment of the Battle of Dutch Harbor in June nineteen forty-two. Today, the dramatic mountainous terrain and abundant local seafood continue to draw large populations of majestic bald eagles alongside curious visitors eager to explore historic military installations, hike rugged wilderness trails, and experience the raw character of a legendary northern port.
