About Seward
Seward rests dramatically along Resurrection Bay, a scenic fjord situated on the southern coast of Alaska roughly one hundred twenty miles from Anchorage by road. Serving as a premier homeport where over half of all Alaska cruise ship tourists begin or end their voyages, the destination welcomes major international lines such as Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Celebrity, Silversea, and Regent.
A brand-new floating cruise facility inaugurated in June 2026 replaces the former dock, enhancing the port's capacity to handle modern vessels seamlessly. Framed by towering snow-capped mountains and dense forests of spruce and hemlock on the Kenai Peninsula, the compact and flat town places most local attractions within a convenient one-mile walk of the cruise terminal.
The destination carries a rich historical legacy, taking its name from William H. Seward, the United States Secretary of State who orchestrated the purchase of Alaska from the Russian Empire in 1867. Serving as the southern terminus of the Alaska Railroad and the historic Mile 0 starting point of original frontier routes, the area once connected this ice-free winter port to Nome via historic dogsled tracks.
Today, the waterfront features the expansive five-mile stony beach of Waterfront Park, where travelers frequently spot humpback whales from the shore, alongside bustling marinas filled with commercial fishing boats and sailboats.
The surrounding wilderness offers extraordinary natural wonders, providing easy access to the massive glaciers of the Harding Icefield and the breathtaking marine ecosystems of Kenai Fjords National Park. Visitors exploring downtown find a vibrant collection of independent shops offering local arts, handcrafted jewelry, Alaskan coffee, chocolate, reindeer jerky, birch syrup toffee, and traditional cloudberry jams. Benefiting from the moderating maritime influence of the Gulf of Alaska, the region enjoys relatively mild temperatures during the peak visitor season, running from mid-May through mid-September.
