About Wrangell AK
Wrangell rests peacefully along the rugged shores of Wrangell Island within southeastern Alaska's sweeping Alexander Archipelago as a charming small town where the pace moves deliberately and the local stories run deep. Boasting a resident population of approximately twenty-five hundred people, the picturesque coastal settlement serves primarily as an essential port of call on Inside Passage voyages rather than a major turnaround hub.
The fascinating municipal history layers itself gracefully across multiple centuries, making Wrangell the third oldest community in the entire state of Alaska and earning the unique distinction of having been governed under four distinct nations and three flags including Tlingit, Russia, Britain, and the United States. Russian merchants initiated fur trading relations with the local Tlingit people in eighteen eleven, and by eighteen thirty-four, Baron Ferdinand Friedrich Wrangel ordered a defensive stockade built near the Naanyaa.aayí clan house of Chief Shakes.
Subsequent gold rushes during the eighteen sixties and eighteen nineties drew thousands of eager prospectors through the area, with travelers heading up the majestic Stikine River into British Columbia during eighteen seventy-four and journeying north toward the Klondike in eighteen ninety-seven. Renowned naturalist John Muir resided in Wrangell between eighteen seventy-nine and eighteen eighty to study the local flora, and the captivating frontier town drew his admiring eye once more a decade later.
What brings modern cruise travelers ashore today is a living, breathing connection to rich Native culture and the pristine surrounding natural landscape. Petroglyph Beach preserves ancient rock carvings dating back approximately six thousand years, while the comprehensive Wrangell Museum houses more than five thousand historic photographs and authentic indigenous artifacts that tell the story of the region.
