About Qaqortoq
Qaqortoq rests in southern Greenland near Cape Thorvaldsen, supporting a population of around three thousand residents as the largest town in the administrative region. Operating as an essential port of call on longer Arctic exploration voyages rather than a turnaround port, cruise ships typically anchor offshore and transport passengers ashore via reliable tender boats. Just nineteen kilometers northeast of the town sit the legendary ruins of Hvalsey, the most prominent Norse site in Greenland featuring a stone church built around 1300. The surrounding natural landscape is defined by the shimmering expanse of Lake Tasersuaq and jagged snow-covered peaks, offering scenic hiking trails amid vibrant summer tundra wildflowers and wild blueberries. Icebergs drift through deep coastal waters year-round, while summer brings feeding humpback and minke whales to the nutrient-rich fjords.
