About Portoferraio
Portoferraio rests dramatically on the edge of its eponymous natural harbor on the island of Elba within the Tuscan province of Livorno in Italy, positioned just five point five miles or nine kilometres away from the Italian mainland. Functioning primarily as an essential regional port of call rather than a departure hub, this historic coastal destination welcomes international passenger vessels into a sheltered marine setting defined by centuries of active seafaring heritage.
Originally founded as Cosmopoli in fifteen forty-eight by Cosimo the First, Grand Duke of Tuscany, the thriving urban center was heavily fortified with massive defensive stone walls and three imposing hilltop strongholds known as Forte Stella, Forte Falcone, and Forte Inglese. The storied municipality later gained international historical fame when Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled to Elba, arriving at the harbor on the fourth of May in eighteen fourteen to reside temporarily at the grand Villa San Martino.
