About Paphos
Paphos is a coastal city in southwest Cyprus, situated about 50 km west of Limassol on the Mediterranean coast. It functions mainly as a port of call on longer voyages rather than a turnaround port, and is visited mostly by smaller luxury ships and megayachts, with larger cruise liners anchoring offshore and tendering passengers into Paphos Harbour, a scene that adds its own charm to the arrival.
The city is a layered destination in terms of archaeology and history. Paphos Archaeological Park covers the major part of ancient Nea Paphos, the island's capital under Ptolemaic and later Roman rule. Several villas here contain expansive, intricate floor mosaics in vivid colour, featuring geometric patterns and narrative scenes drawn from classical mythology, considered among the finest preserved mosaics anywhere in the Mediterranean. Beyond the excavations stands Paphos Castle, at the western end of the harbour, a medieval fortress that has long guarded the port entrance and now offers sweeping views across the water.
The spiritual and mythological pull of Paphos runs deep. Aphrodite is traditionally said to have emerged near her chief centre of worship here on Cyprus, and the Sanctuary of Aphrodite, marking her legendary birthplace, drew pilgrims from across the ancient world for centuries. The city enjoys a subtropical Mediterranean climate and some of the mildest temperatures found anywhere on the island, making it a pleasant stop across much of the year. In 1980, Paphos earned a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its ancient architecture, mosaics and religious significance.
