At the heart of the urban center lies Grainger Town, a remarkable historic district featuring neoclassical architecture built between eighteen thirty-five and eighteen forty-two, including the grand Grainger Market and the historic Theatre Royal. Spanning the river nearby, the iconic Tyne Bridge opened in nineteen twenty-eight and famously served as the direct prototype for the world-famous Sydney Harbour Bridge. Complementing this historic structure, the striking pedestrian Millennium Bridge opened in two thousand one to connect vibrant contemporary cultural hubs across the waterfront.
