About Kavala
Kavala rests gracefully along a deeply sheltered blue bay directly across from Thasos Island as a prominent Greek city and the principal maritime seaport of eastern Macedonia. The historic Old Town of Panagia occupies a scenic hilly peninsula dominated by a magnificent fifteenth-century Greek fortress, featuring winding cobblestone streets and brightly colored Macedonian residential buildings spilling downward toward the sparkling blue Aegean waters. Architectural landmarks include the monumental Aqueduct of Kavala known locally as the Kamares, built by the Ottomans during the sixteenth century atop earlier Roman foundations, alongside the nineteen ten Municipal Tobacco Warehouse housing the renowned regional Tobacco Museum.
Benefiting from a hot-summer Mediterranean climate characterized by sporadic winter snowfalls and elevated seasonal humidity, the municipality lies roughly one hundred miles or one hundred sixty kilometers east of Thessaloniki and twenty-three miles south of inland Drama. Visitors arriving ashore can easily stroll to nearby Rapsani beach or experience the acclaimed Philippi cultural festival running continuously from July through September, featuring world-class theatrical and musical performances hosted within a profoundly rich and storied historical landscape.
